Bridging the Great Disconnect
The educational landscape is currently defined by a profound disconnect. High-level academic research often remains siloed in journals, while school counselors on the frontline navigate role ambiguity, systemic invisibility, and shifting administrative demands. When research does not reach practice, and practice is not protected by policy, the ultimate impact on student equity is diminished.
The Institute for School Counseling Advocacy & Research (ISCAR) was established to solve this structural crisis. We believe that advocacy is not a solitary effort, but a strategic ecosystem.
Why an Institute is Necessary
For too long, the school counseling profession has been defined by those outside of it. This has led to a fragmented narrative where the essential work of counselors is misunderstood by the very systems meant to support them. ISCAR serves as the centralized engine for professional reclamation.
Our mission is to translate high-level improvement science into a Unified Voice that resonates across five critical points:
- The Research Pipeline: Ensuring university-led research and data become actionable resources for school districts.
- The District Strategy: Providing the collaboration frameworks and professional development needed to eliminate role ambiguity.
- Shared Lived Experiences: Taking the stories from school counselors, creating shareable reports and assets to educate the community about their challenges and successes.
- The Policy Narrative: Quantifying the ROI of school counseling to influence state and national legislation.
- The Community Support: Aligning external resources to create a seamless support system for every student.
Reclaiming the Identity of the Profession
ISCAR exists to transform invisible work into a visible, data-driven, and indispensable cornerstone of the educational sector. We are not just studying the gaps in our system; we are building the bridges required to close them.
By unifying researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, we ensure that the strategic architects of student success, our school counselors, have the evidence-based suit of armor they need to lead with authority and provide equitable services for all.
